	The Local Organizing Committee (LOC), the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA) would like to invite all geoscientists from academia and industry to submit an abstract for the Geocongress 2018 to be held 18 to 20 July 2018 at the University of Johannesburg’s Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, South Africa. The theme of this conference is “Bringing the Geosciences Together”, with the aim to provide a platform for southern Africa-based and – associated geoscientists to present their latest research.

Geocongress 2018 Student Funding – Application Deadline Extended to 20 April 2018
	A major aim of Geocongress 2018 is to offer postgraduate students the opportunity to present their research at a national conference, attend scientific sessions across a range of disciplines, and network with prominent researchers in their field. Every effort has been made to keep registration costs for the conference as low as possible, but we understand that there are additional costs that may prohibit attendance. We are happy to announce that the Student Support Subcommittee of Geocongress 2018 will provide financial assistance to deserving postgraduate students to attend the conference, based on the outcome of a competitive application process. Read more about the Call for applications student support here To be eligible for financial support, you need to be a full-time Honours, MSc or PhD student registered for the 2018 academic year at a tertiary institution in South Africa or one of its neighbouring countries. You also need to be the presenting author of an oral or poster presentation at the Geocongress. You are not eligible if you have funding dedicated to attending the Geocongress from another source. To be considered, candidates need to submit their applications to Geocongress2018students@gmail.com by no later than 20 April 2018.

  A 3-DAY APPLIED GEOLOGICAL SKILLS COURSE

Venue:  C.S.I.R. Miningtek, Carlow Rd & Rustenburg Road, Auckland Park, Johannesburg, 2109

About the Course: This three-day course will include talks on the various opportunities within the industry, the different techniques used to collect, analyse and present data, and some “soft” skills such as mentorship, the perfect CV and acing that interview: The course will conclude with an introductory workshop by Rod Tucker on core logging, and a practical session, where delegates will get the opportunity to examine a 600m section of drillcore from bore-hole BV-1, drilled in the Northern Limb of the Bushveld Complex.

Day 1: The participants will be introduced to the nitty-gritty of the mining industry, in terms of potential employment opportunities and what the industry looks for in potential recruits, a view through  a day in the life of an exploration geophysicist, the importance of sampling and  basic necessities in the application of softwares

Day 2 introduces participants to sample analysis (including QA/QC),  data management, Geomatics, details of field work, killer CV writing and experts guide

Day 3 focuses on the Chip & Core Logging Course by Rodney Tucker where  practical application of knowledge acquired from the previous days are put into practice.

Geoengineering the Climate: Impacts and the Developing World Summer School at Beijing Normal University 17-21 July 2017

Background

Solar Radiation Management (SRM) is the most radical, controversial, and rapidly acting form of geoengineering. SRM is a set of proposals to reduce the impacts of climate change by means such as sulfate aerosol injection or marine cloud brightening. This school will focus on interpreting and analysing computer simulation of SRM from the international Geoengineering Intercomparison project (GeoMIP) consortium of 12 Earth System models. We will also investigate social and ethical aspects of SRM. The GeoMIP simulation and data are from large computer systems that are not available in the developing world, and inaccessible with typical internet speeds. This the school will equip developing world researchers with the state-of-the-art simulation results on geoengineering, and the knowledge of how to use these results in their own studies.

Participants

The summer school will train researchers and advanced students with an expertise in their local climate change impacts in the developing world.  The essential local knowledge and impact models needed for understanding and predicting climate change scenarios have not considered geoengineering climates. These impacts may be, for example, in the effects of large storms or typhoons, floods, droughts, or agricultural production. The students will be given GeoMIP data on a disk to keep.

As we welcome the New Year, I thought I’d send my first official greeting to all members of YES Network (SA Chapter). I recently assumed the position of President and National Representative of the SA YES Network and I look forward to the next 2 years of serving and growing this network of young earth scientists.

So, who am I? Well in a nutshell, I grew up in Soweto and went on to adopt the University Pretoria as my second home, where I am currently pursuing my postgraduate studies in climate change related research. Apart from being a rock-star, I enjoy reading (A LOT) and cooking – as well as the eating thereafter. My biggest wish is to (time) travel as much as possible. My colleagues and I look forward to an exciting and fruitful 2017, and I hope you will join us in making this YES Chapter exemplary.”

Kindly meet of our newly appointed National Secretary General, Mr Oluseyi A Abegunde.

Mr Oluseyi is currently a PhD student in Applied Geology at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. His research focuses on environmental geochemistry, GIS and its applications, software modelling, geostatistics, water treatment, data analysis, economic geochemistry and minerals geochemistry.

He is experienced in organizing presentations and attained leadership positions within his department and the university both in undergraduate and graduate level. He has presented in local and international conferences and well published.

The new team of executives is poised to take YES network South Africa chapter to the next level. Therefore, we solicit your support as no rocks, no wealth, no nation.

The YES Network is looking for a new National Chapter Representative for South Africa, the requirement are as follows

• You must be an active South African YES member
• Physically based in South Africa and studying at one of the South African higher learning institutions Need to be actively involved in Earth Science related activities in your institution or at YES 
• Need to be passionate about Promoting Earth sciences among young earth scientists 

Responsibilities for the National Chapter representative include the following

• Prepare plans and budgets for the YES annual action plan (at the country) in collaboration with the national committee members,
• Develop and execute fundraising strategy for the YES annual action plan (at the country) in collaboration with the national committee members, 
• Handle all YES National Committee implementing activities and financial aspects under supervision of the Matron/Patron. 
• Organize scientific forums, sessions, symposiums in your country or regions for YES members
• Organize annual Geo-educational outreach programme in different parts of South Africa
• Collaborate with other scientific organizations/institutions within South Africa
• Participating in all webinar meeting of the network worldwide
• Participate in local and scientific forums as a South African Representative

Young Earth Scientist (YES) Network Activities during the 35th International Geological Congress

The YES Network is an international association of early-career geoscientists who are primarily under the age of 35 years from universities, earth science organizations and companies from across the globe. The YES Network was formed as a result of the International Year of Planet Earth in 2007. In 2009, in collaboration with the IYPE and under the patronage of UNESCO, the YES Network organized its first international Congress at the China University of Geosciences in Beijing, China. The Congress focused on climate, environmental and geoscience challenges facing today’s society, as well as career and academic pathway challenges faced by early-career geoscientists. The YES Network aims to establish an interdisciplinary global network of individuals committed to solving these challenges, and furthering the IYPE motto of “Earth Sciences for Society”. Currently YES Network has over 4000 members from over 120 countries.

Approximately 148 YES members from over 30 countries attended the 35^th IGC. The YES Network coordinated a number of activities, which include three scientific sessions, YES Annual General Meeting (AGM) as well as a One day field trip. The AGM provided a good platform for YES members to engage with one another and National Representatives gave a short presentation about their activities in their respective countries. National chapters presented include South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Malaysia, Iran, and China just to mention the few. The AGM meeting was followed by the YES social dinner event. The YES Network also organized a one day field tour on the rocks and mountains of Cape Town with a focus on local geology. The field trip was organized and led by Ms Ndivhuwo Cecilia Mukosi, with the kind assistance of Mr. Nick Baglow and JP Hunt. The field tour stops include Signal Hill, Sea Point Contact, Hout Bay Beach, Chapmanspeak drive, Cape Point and the Boulders Beach.

During the closing ceremony of the 35^th IGC, the YES Network presented two awards namely, Best Poster from a Young Earth Scientist at 35^th IGC, which was awarded to Mr. Manuel Nopeia (YES Mozambique) and Best Abstract Competition in Applied Geochemistry supported by YES Network and IUGS/IAGC Task Group on Global Geochemical Baselines, which was awarded to Mr. Putra Herianto (YES Indonesia)

We would like thank the 35^th IGC LOC, Council for Geoscience, Geological Society of Africa, European Geological Surveys, Earth Science Matters Foundation, International Union of Geological Sciences, and Kroceus outdoor clothing company for their kind support.
